The call came mid-morning. "Mother, this is Geoff. I've been arrested. Can't talk now. Please come right away." A click sounded and the call was disconnected. Marcia grasped the receiver so tightly a spasm of pain shot down her arm. Fear short-circuited her breath.
Everything had been going so well. Pieter, her husband, was a rising politician in the South African government. Geoff, their eldest son, attended a prestigious university. Socially, politically, financially life was satisfying. Even the racial unrest in their country didn't seem to effect the Retief family much--until now.
But with his defiant involvement in an unlawful demonstration, Geoff had yanked them into the middle of a conflict that could very easily rip their family apart.
Marcia was to find out there was even more--a forbidden love. This is the tale of two families caught in the tug-of-war of Apartheid in South Africa--a war that distorted their deeply held Christian Faith and even risked their lives.
Their story offers an authentic look at what life was like in the well-manicured neighborhoods of Johannesburg and the monotonous drudgery of Soweto when Apartheid was king.
The Soweto Legacy edition by Lorry Lutz JLutz jmldesignsincnet Religion Spirituality eBooks
This historical novel centers on the family of Marcia and Pieter Steyn and their eldest son, Geoff. The setting is South Africa during apartheid times.Lorry Lutz lived in South Africa for 22 years and writes from firsthand experience. She raised her family there amid the heart-wrenching struggles that tore the country apart.
The divisive class warfare, the injustice, the tension within families, often triggered by intolerance and interracial relationships, are not unique to South Africa. Those explosive issues surface in all countries and within many families in one way or another.
There's wisdom in this book. The author doesn't give pat answers. She tells it like it is and then skillfully shows how a family can resolve differences, working through suspicion, resentment, guilt, and hard times to respect and love each other as they learn about forgiveness and reconciliation.
The Soweto Legacy is worthwhile reading.

The Soweto Legacy edition by Lorry Lutz JLutz jmldesignsincnet Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This book captures the tensions from both the white and black sides of the oppressive Apartheit system, through an exciting romance. Love trumps prejudice. We could use more of that. It motivates me to visit South Africa and see how things may have changed as a result of the bold steps of Mandella.
When Soweto Legacy was first published, 25 percent of South Africa's population owned all the land and made all the rules--including who you could love. Virtually every white member of that minority was conviced the system was just and that it was permanent. Thankfully that lie has been silenced. But to keep the nails in the coffins of attrocities like the Holocost and apartheid, their stories need to be retold. This enganging love story does more than entertain; it enlightens. We see behind the evil curtain into the hearts of the perptrators, as well as those who dare to resist. We feel their pain and we celebrate their rewards.
Knowing the endgame of how the unjust "permanent" system collapsed, gives us hope. Today's unthinkable realities can become yesterday's apartheid. Extreme poverty, where almost half of humanity lives on $2 per day--including many today in South Africa--can be eradicated. Soweto Legacy reminds us that what is, no longer needs to be.
Having lived through South Africa's dark years of Apartheid, Soweto Legacy reads like a journey back in time. Not a Bantu myself, my formative years were all spent segregated from my African brothers and sisters. Neighborhoods, schools, restaurants, social clubs, even churches lived under the iron rule of apartheid. Growing up outside Johannesburg, it was very difficult to foster meaningful relationships with Black men, let alone a Black lady. When Soweto Legacy was first published I could hardly imagine a situation where Black and White could fall in love, let alone marry. By the grace of God (and the fortitude of men like Gandhi, Mandela, Tutu, etc.), the laws of the land are now refreshingly different. The Ways of Jesus have sweetened my beloved country. It took brave authors like Lutz to expose the lie (some men are worth more than others) and register the truth (God created all men equal).
The SOWETO LEGACY is a rich and rewarding read that quickly took me to a land I will most likely never visit, let alone live in. It also introduced me to a set of family values that--on the surface--appeared to be much like my own, then surprised me as each family member dealt with those values in a different and complex way. Marcia--the Mom--is caught in the middle as is so often true in most family dynamics and I applaud the author for keeping her character authentic. The college student reminded me so much of my own passions in attempting to right all the wrongs he perceived so clearly. And the conflict with the Dad--who has lost much of that clear, youthful, vision--brought tears to my eyes. Then there is the Native African family, each person bringing the past (and present) prejudice realities to cresendo peaks of emotion for me. I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages--middle school to retirememt. It will spur conversation on multiple topics and open the eyes of those--like me--held the quiet belief that such issues were quickly becoming elements of past of human history.
Of all the amazing accounts Lorry has shared with the world, this is my favorite. I believe this is her first edition, and for good reason it was chosen as her first. She speaks with passion and authority in this great novel of love, loss and the political, social and economic trials the people of Africa have endured. The apartheid, which only recently was dismantled, made interracial relationships like the couple in this book almost impossible and Lorry holds nothing back from the reader. My father was the son of a South African missionary and these accounts reflect the jaw dropping story of the Soweto Legacy. A must read for anyone with a beating heart. I give this book a standing ovation.
Really enjoyed reading this book about South Africa and I would recommend it to anyone who wants an 'insider' view of what it was like to live through these difficult times of apartheid.
Lorry Lutz brings great insight into the world of aparteid through believable characters facing real life conflicts. After living for more than twenty years in South Africa during aparteid, Lorry knows first hand the struggles faced during that period and the impact it had on black and white alike. With no simple fixes, but wise avenues to resolve conlict, Soweto Legacy is an inspiring journey through prejudice, racism, interpersonal relationships and faith that any reader can learn from.
